CRS Update

The Center for Refugee Services has been very busy in the last couple of months.  We apologize that we have not had a chance to share the success made thus far in welcoming evacuated Afghan families.

Plans were quickly made at the beginning of September to collect and prepare for many new arrivals from Afghanistan.

CRS welcomed 320 of these new San Antonio residents in the month of October, providing them with initial needs of bedding and toiletries plus gift cards to get the most essential needs while waiting for resettlement services.    We thank the San Antonio family for their generosity in providing all these needs so quickly to make this happen.

The Muslim Children’s Education and Civic Center and Jewish Women’s Federation have just completed a warm clothing distribution with supporters donating more than they were able to handle.  Over 500 residents were able to come and receive gently used items for the coming months.

To continue to provide the initial needs of all family units coming in the coming months, we need to repeat the collection of new towels, new pillows, new pillowcases, and new blankets.   We still have a good supply of other newcomer items.

We are also going to repeat a warm clothing distribution as we expect many more new residents who left their homes with only 1-2 sets of clothing and we have generous donations yet to be sorted.  (We do not have resources for storage.) We are looking for good shoes and warm clothing for all family members (especially children.)   We will also accept sewing fabric (pieces large enough to sew clothing) and yarn.

Both new items and items for the warm clothing distribution can be brought to 8134 Fredericksburg Rd (Resurgent Church) Sunday, November 7 from 1-5 pm and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (8th – 10th) from 10 am to 3pm.   New items will be given to new arrivals in the coming months while the shoes/clothing/fabric will be made available Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (10th – 12th) from 10 am to 3 pm.

We are also in need of volunteers to help collect, sort, and distribute these items.   Volunteers can register here:

And as soon as the clothing distribution is completed, we will begin planning our holiday toy distribution event.  Please partner with us in providing a new toy for each of the children who have arrived in San Antonio in the last 5 years.  We will be collecting toys for newborns through age 18 beginning the week of December 5.

As with the clothing event, unwrapped new toys will be accepted at the same location (8134 Fredericksburg Rd) during the same time schedule (Sunday, December 5 1-5 pm) and Monday through Wednesday (6th – 8th) 10 am to 3 pm.

Distribution will take place Wednesday through Friday (8th – 10th) from 10 am to 3 pm. Volunteers will be needed to accept, wrap, and distribute toys.  This schedule will be published after the clothing event.

Once again, we are overwhelmed by the support we have received to welcome both our expected refugee resettlement and the unexpected evacuated families.  We continue to provide the best services possible because of you.
