November Update

New Arrivals

We at CRS thought we were busy in October when we shared that we had welcomed 320 new arrivals. Little did we know that in November we would welcome double that, close to 700. Predictions have proven to be wrong. If we get word of a certain number in the next month, we usually see that many in the next week.

New Toy Distribution

This coming week (December 5-10) is our annual new toy distribution and we are seeking 1400 new toys for children 18 and under. Unwrapped toys can be taken to:

Resurgent Church (8134 Fredericksburg Rd)
Sunday, Dec 5 from 2-6 pm and Monday – Wednesday 10 am to 3 pm.
They will be distributed Wednesday 10 am to 3 pm at that location.
Volunteers are still needed to help sort, wrap, and distribute. Our Sign Up Genius site.

Donations Needed

We thank all who have assisted in getting our welcome items for those who have first arrived. We are still in need of 150 blankets, towels, pillows, and pillowcases PER WEEK! (We request pillows to be new, but other items are welcome if clean and gently used)

We are now in need of some toiletries and cleaning items, i.e.

  • full size shampoo
  • soap
  • deodorant
  • disposable razors
  • toothpaste
  • toilet paper
  • dish soap
  • laundry soap

We are opening up the location at:

Resurgent Church
8134 Fredericksburg Rd

Sunday December 5 from 2-6 pm and December 6-10 from 10 am to 3pm to accept donations for this one week. After that, donations can be dropped off at our center at 8703 Wurzbach Rd.

Furniture & Household Goods

We are looking to any resources possible to now provide furniture and household goods for these arrivals as they are being processed through the resettlement agencies to receive permanent housing. Catholic Charities and RAICES, with the assistance of many in the Afghan community, have been finding a place for each person to stay while the paperwork is done for work permits, jobs, and housing.

Our ‘furniture volunteers’ have been working 7 days a week to get the needed items for these apartments. What used to be a ‘2 apartments per week’ task is now a ‘3 apartments per day’ task which cannot be done without groups who have stepped forward to organize the collection and transportation of needed items.

We are so grateful for churches, clubs, friend, and family groups who have formed teams to do this. If you have a group who could join forces to assist in this project, please use the ‘contact us‘ feature on our website.

Clothing Project Completed

We regret that we do not have the staffing or space to accept clothing now. Our clothing project is completed. We are referring clients to the St Vincent de Paul at St Matthews Catholic Church (10703 Wurzbach ) for clothing. If you would please bring your donations to that locations we can match your donations with needed recipients.

Once again San Antonio has shown itself to be a very welcoming city. Thank you!
