Gift Acceptance Policy for Center for Refugee Services
Approved by the board October 2025
Purpose:
The Center for Refugee Services (CRS), a registered 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization, seeks to maintain and grow its ability to assist legally resettled refugees. This policy is designed to guide donors and staff in the process of accepting gifts that align with CRS’s mission, values, and long-term sustainability.
General Policy:
CRS encourages and appreciates the support of individuals, businesses, religious and civic organizations, and foundations in the form of charitable contributions. All gifts must support the organization’s mission of serving refugees with compassion, respect, and cultural sensitivity. CRS reserves the right to decline any gift that imposes undue risk or obligation on the organization or does not align with its values.
Types of Acceptable Gifts:
Cash Gifts:
Monetary donations in the form of cash, checks, or electronic transfers (e.g., credit card donations, Zelle, wire transfers) are encouraged. This is the most efficient way to give to CRS.
In-Kind Gifts:
CRS accepts in-kind donations such as household goods, educational materials, school supplies, and other items that directly support the needs of refugee clients. These items must be in good condition and appropriate for use. Gifts of clothing, blankets, school supplies, and toys are accepted at specific times during the year. Please subscribe to our newsletter and social media to find out when the next donation days will happen.
CRS reserves the right to refuse in-kind donations that cannot be used or distributed due to quality, storage, or logistical concerns. CRS also reserves the right to dispose of in-kind gifts for any reason, at any time. In-kind gifts will be considered unrestricted unless agreed upon otherwise in writing. Donors should drop off in-kind gifts at CRS during business hours (typically Monday-Friday from 10AM-3PM). Items left on CRS property will be considered in-kind gifts, and the above policies will be applied. Be advised that storage onsite is limited. Please call in advance to make sure that your donation can be received.
Bequests and Beneficiary Designations:
CRS encourages donors to consider leaving a legacy through bequests in their wills or as beneficiary designations in retirement accounts and life insurance policies. These gifts should be designated to the general operating fund unless otherwise specified by the donor.
Gift Restrictions:
CRS will honor donor restrictions on gifts whenever possible, provided that the restrictions align with CRS’s mission and do not place undue burden on the organization. If a restricted gift cannot be used as intended, CRS will seek to work with the donor to identify an alternative use or seek permission to apply the gift in a manner that best supports the organization’s needs.
Ethical Standards:
CRS is committed to transparency and integrity in all gift acceptance activities. The organization will not engage in any transactions that may conflict with its mission or that could negatively impact its reputation or public trust.
Review and Approval:
The CRS Executive Director and Board of Directors may review and approve any proposed gifts. CRS reserves the right to refuse any gift or proposed gift.
Gifts to Staff and Volunteers:
Clients, partner organizations, and members of the community may, from time to time, wish to show appreciation to our staff and volunteers through a gift. CRS staff and volunteers may accept these gifts if their value is less than $20.
Acknowledgment of Gifts:
CRS will provide donors with written acknowledgment of all gifts received, in accordance with IRS regulations. Gifts that have monetary value may be eligible for tax deductions according to IRS rules if no goods or services were provided to the donor in exchange for the donation. Donors are encouraged to consult their financial advisors regarding the tax implications of their gifts.
Policy Review:
This policy will be reviewed periodically by the CRS Executive Director and Board of Directors to ensure that it remains relevant and consistent with the organization’s mission and legal requirements.
